You've probably wondered why some perfumes last all day and others disappear in 2 hours. The answer isn't just price. It comes down to concentration, the notes in the formula, and your skin. Here's everything you need to know.
1. Longevity vs Projection vs Sillage: What's the Difference?
These three words get thrown around in the fragrance world, and they don't always move together.
Longevity and Projection Often Trade Off
When a perfume has a very high oil concentration (like an Extrait or Parfum), the scent tends to sit close to your skin and stay for hours, but it can project less. The person sitting next to you may barely notice it.
The reason: heavier oil molecules evaporate slowly, so more of the scent stays on your skin instead of travelling into the air.
On the other side, lighter concentrations (like EDT) contain more alcohol, which lifts the scent into the air. You walk into a room and people notice, but it usually fades sooner.
The sweet spot is a high concentration that is still balanced. Enough oil for longevity, enough lift for projection. That balance is what we aim for in every Nouvor bottle.
What Is Sillage?
Sillage (pronounced see-yazh) is the trail a fragrance leaves behind as you move through a space. Think of it as longevity and projection working together. Good sillage means someone walking into a room after you left can still sense you were there.
2. Concentration Levels: EDC vs EDT vs EDP vs Parfum
The concentration of fragrance oil in a bottle shapes longevity, projection and price. Typical industry ranges are roughly:
- EDC (Eau de Cologne): about 2 to 5% oil, usually 1 to 2 hours, very light
- EDT (Eau de Toilette): about 5 to 15% oil, usually 3 to 4 hours, good projection
- EDP (Eau de Parfum): about 15 to 20% oil, balanced projection and longevity
- Parfum or Extrait: about 20 to 40% oil, long lasting and rich
Where does Nouvor sit? Our bottles are labelled EDP, but every 50ml bottle is made with about 40% fragrance concentration (perfume oil plus aroma compounds), blended in our own lab. That is extrait level strength, well above a typical EDP. In our in-house testing Nouvor perfumes last 8 to 12 hours, depending on the scent, your skin and the weather. For a deeper comparison read our EDP vs EDT vs Parfum guide.
3. The Role of Notes: Base Notes Are What Last
Every fragrance is built in three layers. Understanding this explains why some perfumes seem to "disappear" while others evolve through the day.
- Top notes: what you smell in the first 15 to 30 minutes. Usually citrus, green or fresh. They evaporate quickly.
- Heart or middle notes: emerge after about 30 minutes and last a few hours. Usually floral, spicy or fruity.
- Base notes: the foundation, and what creates longevity: oud, vanilla, musk, amber, sandalwood, benzoin.
If you want a long lasting perfume, look at the base notes. Heavy materials like oud and vanilla anchor a fragrance to skin for hours, while light citrus heavy scents fade faster regardless of concentration. Learn more in our perfume notes guide.
4. Your Skin Type Matters More Than You Think
The same perfume can last a few hours on one person and much longer on another. Why? Skin.
- Dry skin absorbs fragrance oil quickly and gives it little to cling to, so scent fades faster.
- Oily or moisturised skin holds fragrance longer because there's a layer for the scent to bond with.
- Body heat activates and projects fragrance, so warmer skin means more projection.
- Diet and hormones can also subtly change how a fragrance smells on you.
Simple fix: apply unscented lotion before spraying. More tips are in our guide on how to apply perfume the right way.
5. What Makes Branded Perfumes So Expensive?
This is the question everyone has. The main factors are:
- Rare raw materials: natural oud, rose, orris and similar naturals are costly to source.
- Perfumer and development costs: luxury houses can spend a long time developing a single fragrance.
- Packaging and retail: a real share of the price goes to the bottle, the box, import costs and retailer margins.
- Marketing: celebrity campaigns, global advertising and brand prestige all add cost.
Inspired by fragrances skip most of the brand, packaging and advertising costs. They are not the original products and won't be identical, but a well made inspired perfume can capture the same scent direction at a fraction of the price.
